At Shark Fights This Week

How’s that for a creative post title?  It’s descriptive.  I’m in Amarillo, Texas at Shark Fights this week as their official photographer.  I spent most of yesterday in studio with the fighters and the nice dudes from HDNet and today we had weigh-ins.

Casey spent about a week and a half helping out the Shark Fights countdown crew (Picture Lab Entertainment) shooting and editing a few things that ended up in the barker show, commercials, web vids, and in the show’s lead-in.  I put the commercial and a little fun video that one of the guys in the Picture Lab office put together of Bas Rutten’s take on Shark Fights — at the bottom of this post.

We’ve had a very busy week.  As I’d mentioned on Facebook & Twitter, I previously thought September would be a chill out month but we’ve been busy from the start and will be busy until it ends!  Such is the life.  I love working and am glad it ended up this way.

It’s been a nice quiet week in Amarillo with everything pretty much rolling along towards what I think is going to be a great night of fights.  I’m not just saying that because I am working for them this week.  I’m saying it mostly because I think Brock Larson vs Tarec Saffiedine is going to be a fantastic welterweight bout.  I’ve watched Saffiedine excel over at my usual home, Strikeforce, and I’m thrilled to see him fight a guy like Brock Larson.

Also, Smokin’ Joe Villaseñor is on the card fighting Danillo Villefort, a fighter with a very impressive pedigree who has looked good in his last two fights since being cut from the UFC.  Joey is my one of my favorites not just because he always poses well for that weigh-in photo, getting in nice n’ close, but also he’s always in good fights.  Ronnie Mann vs Doug Evans should be a great scrap too.  Overall, I think it’s a solid card and I will do what I can to bring that to you soon as the fights end.

I thought I’d share the faceoffs, plus a few other shots from the weigh-ins and presser, and a sneak peek at the studio stuff.  The studio work this time is only two lights, speedlites — at that. One for the background, and one through a cheapie mini-softbox over the front.  All my studio gear is in San Jose with Strikeforce, so in order to do headshots this week, I had to improvise.  I think I did pretty good, throwing a whole new setup together in just a few days.

Tune in on Sherdog.com for the undercard Saturday (hey, that’s later tonight!) starting at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT and then buy the pay per view if you’re on Dish Network or any cable service.  Sorry for the DirecTV subscribers (that’s me at home too so I guess I’ll have to do my usual replay watch somewhere else) — find someone with cable or Dish Network!
